Bundling your music player with your smartphone means there’s one less thing to misplace. Plus, if you do misplace your music player, it’s much easier to locate it when it’s actually part of a smartphone.

And yet there are still people who prefer having an MP3 player that is separate from their phone. Some already have a phone and just don’t an iPhone when they can get, say, an Ipod Shuffle at a quarter of the price. There’s also the issue of sound quality and usability. It often happens that once an MP3 player gets bundled with a phone, the quality of its sound suffers. Dedicated MP3 players are also generally easier to navigate for music playing than an MP3 player-cum-smartphone.

That said, it’s not impossible to find a smartphone with a good music player – but it’s not easy.

So here’s the second question: if you want one, what should you look for? Top things to consider:

Storage. This is crucial. The greater your devices storage capacity is, the more music you can carry around with you. Now there are two types of storage available nowadays: hard drive and flash memory. Admittedly, the hard drive type is fading away fast. That really isn’t so bad because flash-based storage is more durable than hard drives, and at the 64 GB capacities that some flash-based storage now reach, it’s difficult to defend the hard-drive player.

Design. While storage is a pretty cut-and-dried issue (get the highest-capacity flash type you can find), design is a little more personal. Here is where you need to consider where and how you are going to use your MP3 player.

Sure, one with a touchscreen may be easy to navigate and doubles as a Web browser, but would it be wise for you to bring it to the gym when working out? What would happen if you dropped it on the treadmill? Can you adjust the volume without taking your eyes off of the road?

Battery life. Here’s another reason to choose flash-based storage: hard drives guzzle power and tend to max out at 14 hours audio-playing time. Flash-based players, on the other hand, can keep happily running on a single charge at 20 hours, at the very least.

Brand. There are brands that have managed to get good reputations for the MP3 players. One is ScanDisk. Users have raved about the product’s durability, working even after it’s been dropped several times. Creative Zen players have also gotten excellent feedback for its great sound quality and price. Of course, there’s Apple’s Ipod Touch, which has so many features, it’s almost ridiculous to call it an MP3 player. Zune, the Microsoft answer to Apple’s iPod, has also grown into something beautiful, with its new sleek modernistic design (bye-bye, brown brick). Its sound quality has received great reviews; it is definitely worth considering.
