will boosting the current to a radio transmitters signal boost the range?
i am building a remote controll for my guided missile and the reciever on the missile doesnt have the range that id like it to so i need to boost the range on the transmitter. i was thinking about using transistors to boost the power of the out put without running the boosted current through the actual transmiter so i wont bust it. will that work?
Well… it’s of course possible to add an external amplifier to a radio transmitter. However this sort of question is in the “if you have to ask, you can’t do it yourself” category. RF amplifier design is not a question of just adding “transistors”, it’s more complicated than that. Any attempt to just “add transistors” to a transmitter will only result in distortion, and probably interference to other users of the RF spectrum.
If your existing transmitter is of any significant power it may also result in destruction of your transmitter’s output stage.
A good DIY guide to transmitter and RF amplifier design and construction is “The Amateur Radio Handbook” by the ARRL.
But really, I think you’ll be far more successful in much less time if you just buy a transmitter/receiver pair with longer range.
btw, if you are putting your missile under remote control it is not a “guided missile” – that term refers to missiles with onboard autonomous guidance. What you’re building is more of a remotely piloted missile. Just fyi.
